PERSONAL BACKGROUND

I was born in Cornwall and have always been interested in plants. After leaving school I obtained the last Apprenticeship in Horticulture to be offered in Cornwall at the County Demonstration Garden. Here I achieved City and Guilds Horticulture Phases 1-3.

I then spent from 1990-93 studying at the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh for the DHE, the botanical horticulture standard for over a century.

Working studies have taken me to Asia, notably Japan, and also to South America.

In 1996 I was appointed Head Gardener at the private Tregothnan Botanic Garden near Truro which extends to over 60 acres surrounded by fine plantings in both the woodlands and the deer park. One aim of the Estate is to optimise development of and income from the plants that grow so successfully there, and notably Camelliae.

It was from this background that I applied for a Nuffield Scholarship to enable me to study the opportunities that could be available for Camellia.
